Physical training for a long motorcycle expedition

Saddle stamina, back, wrists, and legs: a 6-week plan before 8–12 hour guided riding days.

Long expeditions load more than the bike: 6–10 hours in the saddle stress back, wrists, and legs isometrically while you track group pace. MIR guided format removes navigation stress, not physics. Six weeks out, three sessions per week without a gym — low-impact cardio, core, hip mobility — is enough for medium catalog tiers.

Cardio without overtraining

Aim for 40–50 minutes at 120–140 bpm: weighted hike, stationary bike, or swim. Road running is fine if knees are pain-free.

Ten days before departure cut volume 30 % — arrive fresh, not fried.

Core and back

Planks 3×45s, side planks, controlled back extensions. Stretch hip flexors — they shorten from desk work.

On tour, a 5-minute morning routine: shoulder circles, neck mobility, bodyweight squats.

Grip and wrists

Grip trainer 3×20, hangs 3×20s if shoulders allow, light kettlebell rotations. Wrist pain on a shakedown ride means bar position or windscreen adjustment.

Quality glove padding beats brute grip strength — vibration stacks by day five.

Shakedown ride three weeks out

One 250–350 km day on the same bike class as the tour, with full luggage weight. Log tire pressure, ergonomics, neck fatigue.

For hard-tier trips, add a second 200 km day back-to-back. Otherwise pick medium in the catalog and a calendar slot.

MIR riders often span 30–55, but that is a guide. Declare experience honestly and pick medium if your last tour was over two years ago.

03How does training map to tour level?

04What if my lower back hurts?

Check peg height and lumbar bend. Pain beyond two weeks warrants medical clearance before paying a deposit.

05Does yoga help?

Yes — hip and thoracic mobility twice weekly reduces pass fatigue.
