The Caucasus rewards motorcycle expeditions with short dry windows and long daylight, but pass weather can flip within an hour. For MIR guided departures, late spring and early autumn are optimal: dry pavement, passable military mountain gravel, realistic 250–300 km group days. Winter and peak July storms are not scheduled — check the live calendar and Georgia destination hub.
Best months
May–June: passes clear, +18…+25 °C valleys, brief showers. September–October: stable autumn, fewer tourists, +5…+10 °C mountain nights.
July works on drier sub-routes; August depends on the calendar slot — southern slopes run drier than north faces.
Surfaces and difficulty
Typical mix: 70 % pavement, 30 % pass gravel → medium. Post-rain clay on north faces is slick — escort lowers pace.
Altitude to 2,800–3,200 m — pack a warmer layer even in June.
Gear for the Caucasus
Shell, insulated gloves, gaiter — mandatory. 95 RON on main routes; cash lari helps in villages.
Full packing checklist and insurance article cover the rest.
